From the Inside Flap
World Trade Center --- Tribute and Remembrance

The World Trade Center out - New Yorked New York in its aggressive architecture and unprecedented size. Thrusting skyward from a spacious plaza, its aluminum-clad twin towers took one's breath away. The complex's ten million square feet redefined the term office space, squrred redevelopment of Lower Manhatan, knocked the Empire State Building off its forty-year perch as the world's tallest structure, and proclaimed the nation's economic might to the world. Four hundred companies, fifty thousand workers, streams of visitors, and shops of every description were all part of the milieu.

New Yorkers took a while to warn to the twin towers, so unlike the city's filigreed skyscrapers, cozy old brownstones, marble bank buildings, and cast-iron stores. The towers were brash, unadorned, efficient. But a territorist attack in 1993 kindled an appreciation of the audacious structures. And the devastating assaults of 2001 that brought down the towers cemented their place as the world's most recognized - and suddenly New York's most admired and mourned - icons of commerce.

Two months before the murderous terrorist attack, Carol M.Highsmith, one of America's preminent architectural photographers, chose a beautiful day to take images of the trade center from many points on the compass. Many of those rare and remarkable large-format aerial photographs are included in this tribute to the World Trade Center.
