书摘:
Sports in Britain and Australia
It is probably true that peoples of all countries like sports. But some people say thatthe British are more interested in sports than in anything else, whereas many Australiansclaim that this is an honour that belongs to them.
In Britain, they knight their most famous footballers and cricketers. During internationalcricket① matches, there is a special telephone number just to give the latest score to thethousands of impatient fans waiting for the results. Many people think that being "sporting"is one of the highest qualities a person can have. It is an old public school tradition and datesback to the nineteenth cen.tury, when people thought sports developed character and teamspirit. People then played just for the love of the game-they were all amateurs. Today, though, the best players are usually professionals. They can make a lot of money.
Many sports which nowadays are played all over the world grew up to theirpresent-day form in Britain. Football is perhaps the best example, but among the others arehorse racing, golf, lawn tennis and rowing.
Many people, both foreigners and British, consider cricket to be most typicallyEnglish of sports. It is true that cricket has until recently remained a specially British game, played only in Britain, and in some parts of the British Commonwealth②. But it is wrong tosay that cricket is the most popular British sport; this honour, undoubtedly, goes to football.Nevertheless, it remains true that for most Englishmen the sight of white-flannelledcricketers on the smooth green lawn of a cricket pitch represents something that istraditionally English.③
