CHANG,Chenguang
Chang Chenguang is a professor of English at the School of ForeignLanguages, Sun Yat-sen University. He began his university studies in1982 in the Foreign Languages Department, Sun Yat-sen University. He has been teaching in the same university since he got his MA in1989. He attended the intensive course "The Teaching and Testing ofEnglish" in UCLES, Cambridge University in 1994, and went on to theUniversity of Wales, Swansea as a visiting scholar and worked on a dictionary project there until September 1995. From August 2001 toJune 2002, he was sponsored by the United Board for Christian HigherEducation in Asia to work as a visiting scholar in Pacific LutheranUniversity in Tacoma, Washington. He received his PhD in FunctionalLinguistics at Sun Yat-sen University in 2003. Currently, he is DeputyDirector of The Functional Linguistics Institute, Sun Yat-sen Universityand Secretary-General of China Association of Functional Linguistics. Chang Chenguang's research interests include Systemic FunctionalLinguistics, discourse analysis, lexis and lexicography. One of hispublications in these areas, A New Dictionary of English Phrasal Verbs,won the China National Book Award in 2000. DAI, Fan Dai Fan is an associate professor at the School of ForeignLanguages, Sun Yat-sen University. She received her BA and MA inEnglish language and literature in 1984 and 1987 from the Departmentof Foreign Languages, Sun Yat-sen University. She received her PhD nfunctional linguistics in Sun Yat-sen University in 2004. She also holdsan MA in human eography from State University of New York atAlbany. She was a visiting scholar in the School of Education, theUniversity of Leicester, UK between 1991 and 1992, in the School ofEducation, Brunel University, UK from 2002 and 2003. She has beenteaching in the School of Foreign Language, Sun Yat-sen Universitysince 1987, except for the years when she was on study trips abroad. Her research interests include Systemic Functional Linguistics,discourse analysis, tylistics, narratology and cross-culture studies. Shepublishes in a wide range of areas with a focus on stylistic analysis. She has also published a novel and several prose collections. Fang Yan is a professor of English and Linguistics in theDepartment of Foreign Languages, Tsinghua University. She began heruniversity studies in 1958 in English Specialty of Western Languagesand Literature Department, Peking University and graduated in July, 1963. During 1982-1984, she studied in the Linguistics Department offrSydney University, Australia, for the degree of Master of AppliedLinguistics and was conferred an MA on Feburary 6, 1984 by SydneyUniversity. Before she moved to the Foreign Languages Department, Tsinghua University in 1972, she had taught English in the WesternLanguages and Literature Department, Peking University 1963-1972). Between 1998 and 1999, she worked for a year in the Modern reignLanguages Department, Baylor University, U.S.A. Fang Yan is a Deputy-Chair of International Systemic unctionalLinguistics Executive Committee, and a Vice-Chairperson of ChinaAssociation of Functional Linguistics. She is a member of the AdvisoryBoard of Functions of Language, a magazine published by ohnBenjamins Publishing Company, Amsterdam. Fang Yan co-organized a number of Systemic Functional events,including the 1995 Summer Institute of Systemic Functional Linguisticsheld in Tsinghua University, the 22"d International Systemic FunctionalLinguistics Congress held in Peking University in 1995, the 1997Discourse Analysis Conference held in Macao University sponsored byMacao University and Tsinghua University. Fang Yan has published more than 30 papers and co-authors amonograph and a textbook. Her research interests include Systemic Functional nguistics,Applied Linguistics, Chinese Culture and Society, American Culture andSociety. FAWCETT, Robin P. Robin Fawcett is Research Professor in Linguistics and Director ofthe Computational Linguistics Unit, Cardiff University, UK. He is afrequent speaker and lecturer at overseas conferences and rsities,having to date lectured in 21 different overseas countries (Argentina,Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Corsica, Finland, France,Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand,Nigeria, Portugal, Singapore and USA), supported by the BritishAcademy, the British Council, the American Association for ArtificialIntelligence, host universities and linguistics associations, etc. RobinFawcett is currently an adviser to the Functional Linguistics Institute ofSun Yat-sen University, P.R. China. In 1974 he founded the annual series of International emicFunctional Congresses, and he was Chair of the organizing committee1975-88. He was also the Founding Editor of Network, a newsletter forsystemic linguists, and he is on the Editorial Board of the journal Functions of Language. He has edited book series for Pinter, CassellAcademic and Continuum, and he currently edits for Equinox. The main focus of his research is the development of a version ofSystemic Functional Grammar (SFG) for the twenty-first century -- i.e.as the major component of an explicit, cognitive-interactive model of acommunicating mind. Halliday is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at theUniversity of Sydney. He is currently adviser to the Halliday Centre forIntelligent Applications of Language Studies of City University of HongKong, and an adviser to the Functional Linguistics Institute of Sun Yat-sen niversity, P.R. China. As a significant contribution tolanguage studies, M.A.K. Halliday has developed a theoretical approachknown as "Systemic tional Linguistics", incorporating acomprehensive model of grammar which has been applied to Englishand numerous other languages including Chinese, Japanese, Vietnameseand Thai. His emphasis has always been on theory as a resource forsolving problems (he calls it an "appliable" theory), so that his workhas been of interest to a wide audience of those concerned withlanguage, such as educators, computer scientists and practitioners in various professional fields.
