内容提要：
本书共分4章，在每一章里，男主人公格列佛都作一次新的航行，由于船难或其他偶发事件面来到一个陌生的国度。第一章描述小人国厘厘普特，他在那里醒来，发现自己已为6英寸高的厘厘普特人所俘。第2章中，格利佛访问了巨人岛，勃罗白丁拉格。在那里他受到一个9岁小女孩的精心照料。第3章的故事发生在拉普特飞岛国，那里的居民从事虚无缥缈的研究，时刻都有发生意外相撞的可能。第4章把格列佛带到胡姆的理想国，那里居住的是严肃、理智而又有高尚道德的胡姆。在这个岛上生活的另一个种族是邪恶、丑陋的牙呼。他们被胡姆用来做仆役。格列佛由于不能被他们接受，最后返回英国，但他已不能容忍人类社会了。 作者简介 约翰·斯威夫特（Jonathan Swift）(1667-1747)是英国伟大的散文作家。他出生在都柏林，父母都是英国人。在爱尔兰接受教育后，移居到英格兰很不情愿地在教堂找了份工作。正是在英格兰，斯威夫特发现了他卓越的讽刺家的才华，并开始对宗教和教育方面存在的腐败现象进行抨击。1704年出版了颇有影响力的 A Tale of a Tub 和 The Battle of the Books.斯威夫特患有美尼尔症，终生受病魔折磨，但仍保存着自己的智慧与精力，晚年写出了 A modest Proposal(1729)和他的讽刺代表作品Gulliver's Tuauels(1726)。

As I Was doing this the little people ran away.I did not have time to catch hold of even one of them.I heard someone shout an order in a loud voice.At once about one hundred arrows were shot into my left side. These felt like sharp needles and were very painful. Some hit my face and I shouted with pain.I covered my face th my left hand and I tried to break all the strings now.I wanted to get free but he little men shot more arrows at me.Some tried to push their spears into me also.
Luckily I was wedring a leather jacket and their spears were not sharp enough to go through.I decided to lie still until night-time.My left hand was not tied so I thought it would be easy to get free.As soon as it was dark I would be able to get away.When I was standing up I was certain that I could defeat my guards. But my plan was not needed. The little men saw that I was lying still.They did not shoot any more arrows but four yards from my head there was a sound of knocking.My head could urn a litte way and I saw that they were building a platform about-eighteen inches from the ground.Four people were standing on it. One of them began to make a speech.He was taller than his companions and he seemed more important too.
