Ⅱ.Talking about Space
1.Yes.on the night ofthe Mid-Autumn Festival when 1 was five years old'my father and 1 went out to enjoy looking at the bright moon.1 wondered what and who would be there and 1 asked my father some questions. From then on I read a lot books on space. Our solar system consists of an average star we call the Sun,the planets Memu, Venus,Earth,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune, and Pluto. The Sun is the richest source of electromagnetic energy(mostly in the form of heat and light)in the solar svstem. The planets.most of the satellites of the planets and the asteroids revolve around the Sun in the salne direction,in nearly circular orbits. The whole solar system, together with the local stars visible on a clear nisht, orbits the centre of our home galaxy,a spiral disk of 200 billion stars we call the Milky Way.The Milky Way is a gravitationally bound collection ofroughly a hundred billion stars. Our Sun is one ofthese stars and is located roughly 24,000 light years(or 8000 parsecs)away from the center of the Milky Wav. 2.The British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking was born in 1942.He has devoted much of his life to probin g the space-time described by general relativity and the singularities where it breaks down. And he’S done most of this WOrk while COnfined to a wheelchair, brought on by the pmgressive neurological disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.Hawking is the Lueasian Professor of Matllematics at Cambridge,a post once held by Isaac Newton. In the late 1960s,Hawking proved that if general relativity is true and the univeme is expanding,a singularity must have occurred at the birth of the universe. In 1974 he fimt recognized a truly remarkable property of black holes, objects from which nothing was supposed to be able to escape.By taking into account quantum mechanics, he was able to show that black holes Can radiate energy as particles are created in th …… |
