2003CHINA AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT REPORT

1. In 2002, all localities conscientiously implemented the spirit of the16th CPC National Congress and the Central Conference on Rural Work and pushed ahead strategic readjustment of agricultural structure in order to strengthen the competitiveness of farm produce, boost the efficiency of agriculture and increase the income of farmers. Strenuous efforts were made to implement rural policies and measures so that agriculture and the rural economy maintained a momentum of steady and sound development despite severe natural disasters, low farm produce prices and growing pressures of international competition.
2. Agricultural production. Agriculture brought about an added value of1 488.3 billion RMB Yuan in 2002, up 2.9％ or 0.1 percentage point over the preceding year. Crop fanning developed steadily. The output of grain, oil-and sugar-bearing crops and vegetables increased while cotton output dropped because of sharp reduction in its growing acreage. Grain output was457.06 million tons, up 1％ from the previous year while cotton output was down by 7.7％ to 4.92 million tons. The output of Oil-bearing crops was28.97 million tons, up 1.1％, and that of sugar-bearing crops was 102.93million tons, up 18.9％. Vegetable output rose by 9.5％ to 529.09 million tons, tea output was 750 000 tons, up 6.2％ and fruit output 69.52 million tons, up 9.7％.
