Destination Hawaii
For millions, the Hawaiian lslands define paradise: palm trees keeping time to trade winds; crystal
-clear waters pulsing with sea life; tropical blooms hurling intoxicating fragrances into the air;
buff young men (and more women every day) riding surfboards at sunset; poniolo (towboys) riding the
open range; and even snow. Yes, snow - on Mauna Kea in winter.
Thousands of gems fashion the archipelago's necklace, but only six islands welcome visitors. Each
is as different as the multiethnic complexion of the local population. Ah, the residents; talking
story and sharing their passions about Hawail as if you'e long-lost pals.
Kaua'i is the eldest sibling - an outdoorsy playground with jagged cliffs, the glorious Waimea
Canyon, and a marvelously lush landscape.
O'ahu hosts 80% of the state's population, mostly in cosmopolitan Honolulu, and has its most
famous beach (Waikiki) and winter surfing on the monster waves of the North Shore.Maui, a playground
of manicured oceanfront hotels and world-class golf also boasts dusty, treasure-filled shops and
superb ethnic eats.
The most Hawaiian of the main islands is Moloka'i, where children go to school barefoot and there
are no stoplights. Lana'i is a private island of pineapples and posh resorts.
And then there's the Big lsland, the youngest and largest member of the island 'ohana (family) -
and one that's growing all the time, thanks to the endless lava fields and expansive spirit of
active Kilauea Volcano.
Hawaii isn't simply the definition of paradise - it's a state of mind. Aloha.
