The Bridges of Madison County is a best-selling novel by Robert James Waller which tells the story of a lonely Italian war bride who engages in an adulterous affair with a National Geographic photographer from Bellingham, Washington who has come to Madison County, Iowa in order to create a photographic essay on the covered bridges in the area.

The Bridges of Madison County is one of the best selling novels in history with more than 60 million copies sold. It was made into a 1995 movie adapted by Richard LaGravenese and directed by Clint Eastwood. It stars Eastwood and Meryl Streep.

A parody of the novel, under the title The Washed-out Bridges of Madison County, ran in the Doonesbury comic strip.

Robert James Waller

Robert James Waller (born August 1, 1939 in Rockford, Iowa) is an American author also known for his work as a photographer and musician. Several of his books have been on the New York Times bestseller list including 1992's "The Bridges of Madison County" which is the largest selling novel in history.[1] It and his 1995 novel, "Puerto Vallarta Squeeze," have both been made into motion pictures. Waller currently resides in Texas.

He received his Ph.D. in business from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington in 1968. Waller later taught at the University of Northern Iowa where he was also dean of the business school. He made a "seven figure" donation to his alma mater, Indiana U.
