A memoir of Roald Dahl's childhood containing some hilariously true stories, such as the great mouse plot of 1924, when an eight-year-old Dahl and his gobstopper-loving friends took a just revenge on the disgusting sweetshop owner Mrs Pratchett. Dahl also recounts the deaths of his father and his sister within the space of a few short weeks, the canings by headmasters and older schoolboys, the grisly methods of matron and the car ride which nearly cost the author his nose. There were glorious times too, with his big family at home in Wales, and the summer holidays spent on a remote island in Norway.

This book covers Dahl's life, from his first memories onward to leaving school, including accounts of his relationship with his mother and his treatment at English public schools. Like most of Dahl's work, Boy is aimed at children but does not flinch from describing the corporal punishment and other brutalities that were common in public schools at that time. It begins with a short history of his family and ends with his first job (he does not go to the university but starts working right after high school).

　　Roald Dahl's quirky and darkly funny tales made him a popular children's author in the second half of the 20th century. In the 1960s he began to write children's books; his first, James and the Giant Peach, was published in 1961. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the tale of a poor urchin was published in 1964. It became Dahl's best known book and was made into a feature film in 1971 (starring Gene Wilder as Wonka and Peter Ostrum as Charlie) and again in 2005 (with Johnny Depp as Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie). Dahl's many other books include Danny The Champion of the World (1975), The BFG (1982) and Matilda (1988).
