内容提要：
本书命名为《语言概论》，意在向读者提供有关语言分析和描述以及人类使用语言进行交际的基本概念和知识，以适应研究生、本科生、专科生和广大语言爱好者等不同层次的需要。既是“概论”，编者无意对语言研究的各个领域面面俱到，而是将注意的焦点集中在语言的语法和社会历史层面。据编者几年来开设“语言概论”课的经验，从这两个方面入手，也许更易于领会掌握语言的本质。虽则如此，本书的讨论所及却也涉及到诸如心理语言学、语用学、文体学等领域，以利于学生进一步地学习和探讨。
