5 DESCRIPTION AND CLASSIFICATION OF CONSONANTS 5.1 Description of consonants As already discussed in Chapter 4, we can divide speech sounds intotwo broad categories-consonants and vowels. The description of a consonant segment should include the answers tothe following questions: 1. What is the nature of the air-stream? Is it set in motion by thelungs or by some other means? In other words, is it pulmonic or non-pulmonic? Is the air-stream egreseive (pushed outwards) or ingressive(drawn inwards) ? 2. What is the state of the glottis? Do the vocal folds vibrate or not?Is the sound voiced or voiceless? 3. What is the position of the velum or the soft palate? Is it raisedhaving the nxsal passage shut off,or lowered to allow the air to pass throughthe nose? Is the sound oral, nasal, or nasalized? 4. What is the place of articulation? In other words, where andbetween what organs (articulators) does the closure or narrowing of the air passage take place? 5. What is the manner of articulation? In other words, what is the degree and nature of the closure or narrowing? (Abererombie 1967:42) The different types of air-stream mechanism have already been discussed in Chapter 3. Most consonant segments are produced with a palmonie egreesive air-stream. As already described in Chapter 3, Section 3.3, the vocal folds areheld apart for voiceless sounds and they are in vibration for voiced sounds.Consonants can be either voiced or voieeless. For voiced consonants thebreath force is generally weaker than for voiceless consonants. The different positions of the velum have been described in Section 3.5. There is a velie closure for oral sounds, but the velum is lowered fornasal and nasalized sounds. 5.2 Place of articulation The speech organs …… |
