A rating to each subject in this study. For statistical assessment,subjects within the same main category, regardless of their subcategories, was considered as on the same proficiency level. For instance, subject A with the rating of Intermediate-low and subject B with the rating of Intermediate-high would both be
categorized as Intermediate. Data Collection Each Oral Proficiency Interview was recorded on audio tape.The researcher then reviewed each audio tape and identified all conceivable erroneous sentences produced by each subject and tabulated them on a data sheet. Some of the recorded sentences have been modified by partial repair to display the error nder discussion more clearly. In order to provide the necessarycontext as ackground, erroneous sentences are sometimespresented in a dialogue format, and in some cases each sentence might contain more than one error. The personal sheet contains pertinent information about each subject's previous language learning experience and family background. CHAPTER IV RESULTS Introduction Pilot Study Linguistic performance data collected from the 23 subjects in the Pilot Study was extremely informative.The OPI proved effective in assessing the subjects’ability to use the Chinese language and to weigh appropriateness in real—life communi— cative situations.The investigator found in the Pilot Study a wide variety of errors committed by Chinese language learners. Main Study Combined with subjects from the Pilot Study.a total of 79 college level subjects participated in this study.At the conclu— sion of each interview.the individual subject was also rated for his or her Chinese language proficiency in accordance with ACTFLOPI guidelines.Table 1 shows the distribution of subjects according to the level of oral proficiency.No subject achieved the level of Superior,a near native level of proficiency.
