E: Yugoslavia. So your accent is very close to a Yugosla-vian accent.
N: Or Bulgarian.
E: How about you?
T: My name is Tennyson. I'm from the U.S. Originally from Jamaica. My native language is English. It's influenced a lot by colonization.jamaica was colonized by Britain. Jamaicaalso is a Caribbean Island so we have a certain lilt in our ac-cent. We have a certain cadence that's somewhat musical,but l also have lived in the U.S. for 12 years and that also has shaped the way I speak English.
E: Yes, l can hear it in your accent. It sounds quite Amer-ican. But if I really listen I can also hear the Jamaicanflavour, the Caribbean flavour. You are right. It's more mu-sical. But I understand you also spoke other languages when you were little.
T: We have a dialect that is a mixture of Spanish influ-ence, African influence, and a number of languages. During colonization you had a mixture of people living in the Caribbean and that shaped the language, the dialect,the “patois”there.
g: That's a good word to know, “patois,” isn't it? That'sthe local dialect. If I were to ask you, when you talk with Eng-lish speakers from other countries, is there any country's ac-cent that you find difficult to understand?
J: When Amenioans speak English I can't undengtand well.I can undenstand like 60% of what they say.
E: You find that when you listen to an Amerioan speaking English, you get only 60%.
J: I think a British speaker is much more easier for me.
E: How about you?
T: I really don't have diffioulty. Maybe part of that is be-cause I've done a lot training and teaohing. So I've been ex-posed to people from all over. I've had just trained myself to listen to people's talk, so I really don't find any diffioulty.
E: I don't find too muoh trouble either. But I must saythat sometimes the accent in southern part of the U. S. in the mounta
