Rawlins was born in Wisconsin,she attended public schools in Illinois,graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University,and then returned to Illinois to teach high school English,history ,and social studies.Later she moved to Topeka,Kansas,where she raised a daughter and son,attended graduate school at the University of Kansas,and workde for the State of Kansas.
