![]() ![]() But can applying the nurture hypothesis help create geniuses? To answer this weneed to define genius. In the case ofchildren, the term usually used is child prodigy. Strictly speaking, however, even the most talented or hardworking smart children aren’t prodigies.A true prodigy is a child who by age ten exhibits a mastery of a field usually undertaken only by adults. Prodigies usually excel in one field. Most commonly prodigies are found in music and mathematics. It’s easy to understand why. Both music and mathematics are rule driven.Obviously, children who are exposed to music at an early age are more likely to become involved in it than children who aren’t.Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791)and Yo Yo Ma(1955-)are examples.Mozart’S father was a violinist, and Ma’S mother was a singer and his father a composer and conductor. The mother of another child prodigy,Janos Starker(1924-),was so determined for him to play the cello that she bought a parrot. The bird was trained to say just one thing:“Practice,Janos, practice!” More often, however, there is a sinister side to becoming a prodigy. The father of pianist Ruth Slenczynska(1 925-)was a violinist who started her on lessons when she was three. She made her debut with a full orchestra when she was eight, and people claimed she was the next Mozart.Only later did the world find out that her father made her play up to nine hours each day and hit her if she played even one wrong note. She suffered a mental breakdown when she was fifteen and stopped playing fof many years. |
