内容提要:
One of Sir Walter Scott's most celebrated novels,Rob Roy is set in the north of England and Scotland in the years before, during and after the first lacobite rising of 1715. Rob Roy is a swashbuckling chieftain of the Clan MacGregor who is forced to become an outlaw for his alleged espousal of the lacobite cause. He achieves great fame by his kindness to and sympathy for the poor and oppressed and he is sought out by Francis Osbaldstone and his spirited sweetheart Diana Vernon in their struggle with their malign kinsman, Rashleigh. Rob Roy is a truly heroic tale set against the turmoil surrounding the Hanovarian succession.

This novel, first published in 1817, achieved a huge success and helped establish the historical novel as a literary form. In rich prose and vivid description, Rob Roy follows the adventures of a businessman's son, Frank Osbaldistone, who is sent to Scotland and finds himself drawn to the powerful, enigmatic figure of Rob Roy MacGregor, the romantic outlaw who fights for justice and dignity for the Scots. This is an incomparable portrait of the haunted Highlands and Scotland's glorious past. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From AudioFile This early nineteenth-century classic, which tells the story of the Robin Hood of Scotland, is alive and well in this production, elegant in sound and style. Frederick Davidson's voice masterfully moves from brogue to dialect, from Gaelic to English. He succeeds at the resonance of narrator Francis, the commanding voice of Rob Roy, the growl of the wicked Rashley, and the beautiful lilt of Diana Vernon. This recording, accordingly, "thrills the blood." J.D.N. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.
